Cyril and Methodius Russian Orthodox Church in America parish) is a church located on Beacon Street in the Back Bay neighborhood in Boston, Massachusetts. It is the oldest Russian Orthodox church in New England, one of the few churches of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia in the United States, and the only parish church in New England belonging to this particular parish. History The first Orthodox church in Boston was Saint Saviour’s Church in Cambridge, Massachusetts which was constructed from 1838 to 1841. Russian émigrés, mainly Jewish, began building a church in the style of Orthodox Russia in 1863. The church’s interior was decorated with 18th-century Russian icons, but was modified to reflect the Greek Orthodox faith by Iosif Klein. Klein was the architect of the church and the first native-born clergyman to serve at the church. With the Russian Revolution of 1917, the parish experienced persecution and anti-religious turmoil. Tsarist Russia denounced the church as a “foreign institution” and demanded its confiscation. Klein refused and fled Russia. Under the leadership of Alexander Poletaev, the parish was not officially disbanded, but the property was confiscated by the newly-formed Soviet government. In 1921, Poletaev invited the Russian ambassador to grant the parish a place to worship, and by 1923 the church was once again well-established. In 1960, the parish moved into a new building on Beacon Street. By the time the church moved, the parish had become independent of the Russian Orthodox Church in America. In 1987, the current structure was opened. The parish gained an exemption from Boston’s zoning laws in 1995. The church is the oldest Russian Orthodox church in New England and the third oldest in America. Organization As a parish of the Russian Orthodox Church in America, the parish follows the canons and discipline of the Russian Orthodox Church. Its liturgical services are conducted in the church’s original Slavonic language. The Church of the Holy Saviour is the only parish in the United States that is under the authority of the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia
